If you actually read through the database entries, the story ties in nicely with the lore of the previous games and even gives a pretty strong back story to the ball of rage that is the “Doom Slayer” you play as. This may be partially Bethesda’s fault though, as I think this is a result of critics (who didn’t get review copies) rushing through the game to get their reviews up and not taking the time to read the optional database entries or pay attention to the game’s dialogue. Honestly, one of the greatest tragedies of most of the Doom reviews I’ve seen thus far is the insistence that there is no worthwhile story. That’s not to say there is no lore to the game. Optimus Prime wants you to retrieve the Rosetta Stone. If you’ve grown tired of modern FPS conventions that spoon feed you tons of exposition, forced stealth sections, and scripted set pieces then you’ll almost certainly find Doom‘s pacing to be a relief from the tedium of modern AAA game design. Throughout the game’s 8-10 hour campaign (or 12 hours if you’re like me and spent way too much time hunting for secrets and ogling the environments), I would say you spend what feels like 2 or 3 percent of that time in any kind of situation where you’re forced to listen to or watch any form of cinematic or story in a situation where you can’t shoot things in the face. It starts relentlessly fast and heavy, and keeps that pace for most of its run time with just enough break here and there to catch your breath. If I were to compare Doom to a song, I would immediately mention “Bleed” by Meshuggah. This game does not waste your time with preamble, complex introductions, or long winded cut scenes, it knows what you’re here for and it delivers immediately.
I was pretty sure I was going to like Doom within the first 60 seconds, since that’s about how long it took me to have a gun in my hands and be shooting demons in the face. Do you enjoy hunting for collectibles, secrets, and power-ups? Was Doom 3 too much of a slog for you compared to the originals? Do you value a strong single player over all else? If you answer one or more of the following questions in the affirmative, then you probably owe it to yourself to give Doom a shot. I’m going to start this review with a simple litmus test that should determine how much you will enjoy Doom.
